•MODERNISTA!'S NICK SIMMONDS DEAD AT 47> Modernista's
Amsterdam office is mourning the sudden loss of managing director and
co-managing partner Nick Simmonds, who suffered a fatal brain
hemorrhage on Friday, June 27. He was 47. Simmonds began his career in
advertising in 1982 as an account manager at Allen, Brady & Marsh
in the UK and later joined Publicis, London before moving to Amsterdam
to work for Wieden + Kennedy in 1997. In 2006, he joined Modernista! as
managing director and co-managing partner of the agency's newly-opened
European office. A funeral will take place at 2pm on Tuesday, July 8 at
St. Michael's and All Angels Church in London. A reception will follow
the service at Roehampton Club. Friends in Amsterdam will also
celebrate Nick's life at Café Thyssen (Brouwersgracht 107) on Saturday
July 12 at 4pm. Both are open to all of those who would like to attend.
•SETH MCFARLANE TEAMS UP WITH GOOGLE ADSENSE> Family Guy cartoonist Seth McFarlane has struck a deal with Google's AdSense program to produce and distribute a series of 50 two-minute animated webisodes. Set to debut in September, "Seth McFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy" will appear in lieu of banner ads on websites frequented by McFarlane's young, male audience and incorporate advertising, reports The New York Times. McFarlane - who will receive a percentage of ad revenue - said in an interview his "Cavalcades" will be "animated versions of the one-frame cartoons you might see in The New Yorker, only edgier." •Q DEPARTMENT KICKS OFF "THE DIRECTORS SERIES" WITH KUNTZ> New York music studio Q Department has launched an invite-only "avant
garde" evening of musical journeying called The Directors Series. The
inaugural event on June 17 was curated by Tom Kuntz. The evening began
with the MJZ director dragging a six-foot tall wizard on a full moon
set as a signifier of his three-hour "musical journey" and ended with
an impromptu drum solo by Michel Gondry. The next event takes place on
July 17 and will feature Happy's Guy Shelmerdine. Other directors
slated to participate are RSA's Ben Dickinson, Tronic, Marie Hyon &
Marco Spiers of Psyop, Little Minx's Malik Hassan Sayeed, Hungry Man's
Nanette Burnstein, Mike Figgis and Anonymous Content's Joseph Kosinski. •EBELING TAKES ON ENVIROHYPE> The Ebeling Group founder
Mick Ebeling launched a touring series of conversations with cultural
and corporate big wigs at the Promax|BDA conference in New York last
week with a panel called "Economy and Ecology: Massive Change in
Corporate Branding". The hour-long discussion featured Coca-Cola SVP of
Global Brand Marketing Marc Mathieu and Canadian design guru Bruce Mau
discussing corporate environmental responsibility and economics. The London International Awards has extended its deadline to Friday, July 11. |
